Lucky Ali holds audience spellbound

He pulled out all the stops as he took the audience through soulful numbers like ‘Gori Teri Aaankhen’ and ‘Anjana Rahon Mein’ to the rollicking ‘Kaise Kahoon Ke Woh Main Hoon’ from Xsuei to more gritty pieces like ‘Nahi Rakhta’ and ‘Apna India’ from his new album Rastaman. Singer, composer and performer Lucky Ali held the Sunday audience spellbound at Xpressions, the annual festival of Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar (XIMB).

Amid near full moon and a slight chill, Ali brought the mood to a slow burn rather than setting the stage on fire.

The concert kicked off a good 30 minutes late as the meticulous artist took his talented band and the acoustics through a series of checks. But the wait was well worth it as track after track in his inimitable smoky and mellifluous voice spilled out into the winter evening. Ali kept varying the mood and tempo as he went from his characteristic ballad to rock to semi-classical tracks. Popular playbacks from films like ‘Na Tum Jano Na Hum’ and ‘Ek Pal Hai Jeena’ were the icing on the cake.

He had his young audience on their feet halfway through the show as he interacted with them and asked them to ‘keep the child alive in themselves’. Not missing a beat, he dedicated songs from his new album to the real world out there and took a swipe at reality shows which he dubbed unreal. ‘’Let us meet back on Facebook,’’ he added.

Ali gave each of his accompanists __ Subhash Pradhan on acoustic guitar, Kalyan Barua on lead guitar, Manoj George on violin, flautist Anand Prasanna Patnaik (incidentally an Odia), Suresh and Peter on percussion and drums their moments in the sun.

Xpressions 2011 kicks off

Xpressions 2011 was launched by the traditional burning of a wooden X inside in Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar.

The dean of the institute, Father P D Thomas lighted the wooden X in the presence of the faculty members and students. This has been the tradition for the past 13 years, for Xpressions launch. Xpresions is considered to be the biggest B-School event in Eastern India. The theme for this year’s fest is Iridence, the colour reflections. With more than 50 events scheduled to take place, this year’s fest will be bigger than ever. Participants from 70 B-schools across the country will participate.

The main attraction of the event will be Gladiator, an event that will put to test the managerial and interpersonal skills. Kurukshetra, a game with a history of its own, is based on business strategy and decision-making skills. Helios, the only management game that allows undergraduates to participate will keep the participants engaged for three days.

Decibelz, a cultural event, in which 70 rock bands from all over India competed, but only seven reached the finals, will keep the participants engaged. Vishal Jaisingh, will be the judge. A band from Orissa has been waitlisted and will participate if any finalist team drops out.

"We are expecting 30,000 people to attend the event,” said Akankshit, one of the organisers. There will be Carnival De Vogue, the fashion show which will be judged by Harihar Das and Minati Sabat. Many new events have been introduced this time like face painting and quiz competitions. Inquizzitive, the quiz competition, will see corporates as well as students participating in it.

CeleblitZ, the star night, will see Lucky Ali performing for the crowd with his complete band. Many informal event like Thirkan, Goonj and Nukkad wil keep the participants engaged.

“This fest will be a cultural experience for us and we will also get to know the backhand work experience,” said Jyoti Prakash, another organiser.
